CARTERVILLE -- Cleotis Calvert Eveland, 90, of Marion, formerly of Carterville, died, Tuesday, July 1, 2014, in Parkway Manor Nursing Home in Marion.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 5, in Riggin-Pillatsch and Burke Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brad Harlow officiating. Burial will be in North Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 406 S. Division St., Carterville, IL 62918. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.

Cleotis was born June 13, 1924, in Crainville, to Herman Lee and Margaret (Tanner) Calvert. The family moved to Chicago in 1928, and lived there for several years. In 1948, the family moved back to Carterville where she met and married Vernon Lincoln Eveland, living together happily for 41 years until his death in 1990.

She is survived by her daughter, Margie Malony of Herrin; sons and daughter-in-law, Tom and Marsha McGuire of Carterville, and Paul C. Eveland of Marion; grandchildren and their spouses, Tammy and Tracy Brust of Hurst, Michael and Robin Malony of Herrin, Scott McGuire of Harrisburg, and Trisha McGuire of Carterville; great-grandchildren, Kenneth Taylor of Marion, Christopher Zimmerman of Herrin, Andrew Smith of Herrin, Christopher Malony of Colp, Jordan McGuire and Kerrigan Holmes, both of Carterville, Shay McGuire and Alysia McGuire, both of Harrisburg, and Aimee Brust of Hurst; great-great-grandchildren, Logan and Cyndee; and special niece, Robbie Upchurch of Creal Springs. These are the people who were most dear to Cleotis during her life along with many cousins and close friends.

Cleotis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon; infant brother, Herman Valdean Calvert; and first husband, James T. McGuire.

She was a 1943 graduate of Lucy Flower Girls High School in Chicago.

Cleotis' interests were mainly domestic. She studied cosmetology at the Vocational Techincal Institute (SIU) and worked in her own beauty shop out of her home. She had worked in Chicago at the Illinois Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator, the telephone office in Carterville and for the General Telephone Company in Marion. She also enjoyed working at the Carterville State and Savings Bank for a few years as a receptionist.

She enjoyed visiting with friends and family; planting flowers; cooking; sewing, especially piecing quilts, having left a handmade quilt to each of her three children; corresponding with several school friends; and reading.

Cleotis was a charter member of Friends of the Library of Carterville.

She was a faithful 50-year member of First Baptist Church of Carterville.

Cleotis lived in Marion for a short time and belonged to Senior Citizen Center and Carnegie Library.
