John DiNapoli, who was nearing retirement, was a 22 year veteran of the Holyoke Police Department in Holyoke, MA. He was gunned down three days before Christmas in 1999. John was unarmed and in an unmarked cruiser when Eddie O. Morales, who was selling drugs, shot at him 10 times on the corner of Hampshire and Walnut Street. Five of the shots from the 9mm handgun struck the officer, killing him instantly. Morales fled to Scranton, PA before being captured, receiving life in prison, with no parole for his crime. John left behind his two children, Andrew, who followed in John's footsteps and became a police officer in Holyoke. John also left behind his daughter JoBeth and his fiancee, Carol J. Bevan-Bogart. John and Carol were to move into a new home in the new year, but they never got that chance.
