Frank J. Merchlewitz, 88, of Winona, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Lake Winona Manor in Winona, MN.

Frank was born on January 12, 1926, in Winona to Peter and Helen (Zabrocki) Merchlewitz. He was united in marriage with Bonnie Paape on May 17, 1952, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona. Bonnie passed away on December 3, 2013.

He attended school at St. Stanislaus and Cotter High School until he was needed to work for his father. Frank was a partner of the Winona Dray Line for 43 years. He also served in the US Army during World War II.

Frank was a member of the Winona Athletic Club, American Legion, Elks, Westfield, Cedar Valley, Winona Family YMCA and the Basilica of St. Stanislaus.

After a long and dedicated career at the Winona Dray Line,Frank was always on the go. He could be seen around town attending daily mass, shopping at Midtown Foods and Bloedow's, or exercising at the YMCA. He couldn't wait to go to the Berry Patch during strawberry season or to park on the corner of Broadway and Kansas streets to watch the Steamboat Days Parade from the back of his red pick-up truck. He anxiously awaited the arrival of the golfing season each spring and looked forward to joining his many golfing buddies over the years. One of Frank's many accomplishments in this sport included scoring his second hole-in-one in the same season, on the same hole with the same club at Westfield Golf Course.

He was a faithful spectator at many Winona Winhawk and Cotter Rambler events. But he was the best at listening. Frank was most proud of each and every child and grandkid. He attended and supported countless concerts, plays, parades and sporting events. He especially enjoyed hearing about all of their higher academic and athletic accomplishments.

Frank is lovingly survived by his children: Claire (Gary) Bambenek, Prior Lake, MN; Matthew (Karen) Merchlewitz, Mark (Ann) Merchlewitz, Luke (Brenda) Merchlewitz, and John (Mary) Merchlewitz, all of Winona; and a large extended family that includes 13 grandchildren and many beloved others.

Frank's brothers, Richard, Leonard and Robert, along with his sister Margie, have also passed. His other remaining living sisters are: Irene Janikowski and Cecelia Wondrow, both of Winona; and Phyllis Helgemoe, of Rochester, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2014, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka. The Rev. Monsignor Thomas J. Hargesheimer will officiate. Following the Mass, the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9 of Winona will provide military honors outside of the Basilica.

Frank will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Cemetery in a private family ceremony.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2014, at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, where the recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2014, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka.

The family respectfully requests memorials be directed to the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka or to Winona Area Hospice Services.
