In 1894, at the age of 20, Oscar left Sweden for America. Soon after his arrival, he changed his surname from GUSTAFSON to GRAVER. Though he Anglicized his name, he retained a Swedish pronunciation still used today:
GREVERE.

He got a job and rented a room from the widow Gernondt. Seven years later Oscar would marry Nellie Gernondt, eldest of the widow's daughters, and settle down in his newly built home at what is now 340 Easton Street in Depew, NY. This house remained the Graver family homestead until 1980 - 50 years after Oscar's death.
