Mark Scherer, age 87, of Cape Girardeau died at 9:16 PM Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at his home.

He was born on February 24, 1927 in Benton, Missouri to John and Bertha Enderle Scherer. He married Maggie Jo Myers on September 15, 1956. She preceded him in death on December 8, 1989.

Mark honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Parish. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening and working in the yard. Mark spent time visiting with his neighbors and friends, especially the morning coffee crew at McDonald's.

He is survived by 2 daughters; Karen Murph (Don) of The Colony, Texas and Susan Kelsay of Cape Girardeau, 1 son; Bill Scherer (Paula) of Kennett, Missouri, 2 granddaughters; Jessica Huseby (Tim) of Front Royal, Virginia and Erin Kropp (Justin) of Little Elm, Texas, 2 grandsons; Marcus Scherer of Piggott, Arkansas and Dylan Scherer of Belton, Missouri, 1 great granddaughter; McKenzie Scherer of Piggott, Arkansas, 2 brothers; Vernon Scherer of Benton, Missouri and Robert Scherer of Venice, Florida, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 2 sisters; Druscilla Felter and Louise Burger and 3 brothers; Paul, Harold and Raymond Scherer.

Visitation will be held from 3 PM to 6 PM Sunday, July 6 at Crain Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau. Parish prayers will be said at 5 PM.

Funeral mass for Mark Scherer will be held at 10 AM Monday at St. Vincent DePaul Parish in Cape Girardeau with the Rev. David Hulshoff officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to Birthright, the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri or the Society for Melanoma Research and will be accepted at the funeral home.
