DANIEL LEE CHILDERS, 74, passed into the arms of his Heavenly Father on July 1, 2014, surrounded in love by his wife and children at SOMC Hospice Center.

Dan was born to Ervin and Grace (Lykins) Childers on November 28, 1939 in Lucasville. A graduate of the Valley High School class of 1957, Dan proudly served his country in the United States Marines upon graduating from High School, and was honorably discharged. He was a faithful member of Portsmouth Baptist Church, where he loved to drive the church bus, and later attended Scioto Baptist Church.

After many ventures and journeys he started his business, Childers Piano and Organ, at it's original location on Chillicothe Street in November 1969. He loved being able to provide music to the community so much that in 1973 he opened his second location in Gallipolis, Ohio. It was during this time when Dan became known to the community as "Dandy Dan the Music Man." His business grew and he soon expanded the original store to its current location on Gallia Street, and changed it's name to Childers Music Center, where they continue to bring a variety of all musical instruments today. In September of 1983 he opened his Chillicothe location with his wife, Judy. Together, with their son, they operated that store for 23 years.

Dan really enjoyed all things sweet and in 1988 decided to open his own sweet shop, Crispy Creme Donut Shop in Ironton, Ohio. With the help of his daughters, Ann and Lisa, and son Dwaine, he loved making and delivering donuts across the area.

Supporting the area youth in the Scioto County 4-H program, many area schools, the Civic Forum Spelling Bee, Special Wish Foundation, and the Scioto County Charity Horse Show all held a special place in Dan's heart. As an avid sports fan with a great love for the Valley Indians, Dan loved to cheer on his purple and gold and help feed the baseball and basketball teams and band after their games.

Dan loved classic cars of all types and in his free time he loved to restore and show his cars. As a member of the Scioto Antique Motor Car Club, Dan traveled the country with his many cars and displayed them for all to see. He loved his car club buddies with all his heart and had a great time traveling. He was also a member of the electricians union, Retail Merchants Association, NFIB, UCT, NAMM, NSRA, and NHRA.

Upon his journey he had a wonderful lady, Judy Mae Blakeman, by his side, whom he married July 5, 1958. She, along with their children, Ann (Jim) Meyers of Portsmouth, Dwaine (Sandy) Childers of Chillicothe, and Lisa (Tim) Knauff of West Portsmouth; grandchildren Melissa (Jason) Whitt, Sara Childers, Brandon and Tiffany Knauff, and great grandchildren Hannah and Jacob Whitt survive. He's also survived by a sister Ervena Conley of Texas and a brother Robert (Jackie) Childers of Cocoa, Florida and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceeded in death by his parents, a step-mother Mary Marsh Childers, brother Charles Ray Childers, and granddaughter Jennifer Meyers.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon, Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Scioto Baptist Church with Tom Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Jacob Cemetery where military graveside rites will be performed by the William A. Baker and James F. Irwin Posts of the American Legion. Friends may call 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville and an hour before the funeral Saturday at the church.

The family would like to give special thanks to the SOMC Hospice staff for their loving care of our husband, father, and papaw. Your support of our family in our time of grief is greatly appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SOMC Hospice 2201 25th Street, Portsmouth, Ohio, 45662.
