BILLY SAMPSON'S DEATH

CANTON'S 19TH FATALITY- DRIVER KILLED WHEN TRAIN RAMS CAR AT CROSSING HERE
-RIDER HURT SERIOUSLY IN SMASHUP-
CANTON MAN FAILS TO REMAIN STOPPED UNTIL FLASHER OFF-

Canton's 19th traffic fatality of the year occurred at 12:40 A.M. today when a Pennsylvania Railroad train rammed a car at a crossing on Carnahan Ave, NE, just south of 9th St. Killed was the driver of the car, Billy Franklyn (sic-Franklin) Sampson, 30, of 706 Waynesburg Rd SE. A passenger, Dencil Castle, 27, of (Stark County's 1966 Traffic Toll: 77 Total this date; last year 66) 1211 4TH St. SW, suffered a broken neck and was in guarded condition in Mercy Hospital.

FAILS TO WAIT ON FLASHER

Canton police said Mr. Sampson, driving south on Carnahan Ave., stopped at the crossing to wait for an eastbound train. Witnesses said the car shot onto the track as soon as that train had passed, not waiting for the warning flashers to turn off and was struck by a westbound train which had been hidden from view. Traffic Sgt. Jacques Serra said the incident should serve as a warning to all drivers to wait for the flashers to go off before crossing a railroad track. Sgt. Serra said evidence indicates the victim had been drinking heavily before the crash. He said Mr. Castle told officers he had met Mr. Sampson at a tavern a short time earlier.

KNOCKED 74 FEET

The Engineer of the train, E. Sprandel, 51, of 6869 Oakcrest Ave. NW, North Canton, told police the train had been traveling 47 miles an hour. The car was knocked 74 feet by the impact. The death makes the city's toll more than double that of last year, which was 9. The county now has 77 road deaths, up from 11 last year, at this time and equal to the entire year's toll.
