Martha Scott Lequeux, 83 of Cobbs Creek, Virginia passed away Thursday, July 25th. Martha, or "Scotti" as many knew her, was a long time resident of Mathews County. She was married to Rene G. Lequeux, an Air Force veteran for nearly 60 years. While raising her children, she worked as a substitute teacher in the Mathews County School system. In addition, she was involved with the community action agency that served the Williamsburg area and parts of the Middle Peninsula.
After raising her children, she decided to continue her education. She graduated from Christopher Newport College with a Bachelor of Art degree, followed by a Masters of Public Administration for Health Services Management from Golden Gate University in San Francisco.
An ardent and unfailing advocate for the elderly and their families, she retired after 22 years from the Peninsula Agency on Aging in Newport News, Virginia as the Long-term Care Director. The agency aims its services at Americans 60 years and older, particularly those in the greatest economic or social needs. Programs she helped nurture such as in-home care and case management have become synonymous with the PAA. She was instrumental in starting the first Alzheimer's support group for caregivers in the Hampton Roads area as well as the Hampton-Newport News chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. She was also an adjunct professor at Norfolk State University and Christopher Newport University.
She is survived by her five daughters, Jamie Colonna of Newport News, Martha Kay Lequeux of University Park, MD, Scotti Lequeux of Kilmarnock, Michele Schultz and Holly Matthews of Quinton. She is also survived by six grandchildren, James Tierney and Erin Grecu, Shane, Sarah and William Matthews, and Nolan Schultz, and one great grandchild, Kayden Tierney.
She was a member of Apostles Lutheran Church in Gloucester. Family visitation is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday evening at Foster Faulkner Funeral Home in Mathews, Va. Services are to be held at Foster Faulkner Funeral Home in Mathews Virginia on Monday, July 29 at 11:00 a.m. A Christian burial will follow at Maury Cemetery in Richmond.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Peninsula Agency on Aging for the Hampton, Newport News chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
