English portrait painter. Born in NW England, Romney traveled to London in 1762 and quickly became a fashionable portrait painter, as popular in his time as Sir Joshua Reynolds. He took a trip to Italy in the mid 1770's to hone his skill, before returning to London. He painted Emma Hart, the future Lady Hamilton, several times and his most famous portrait is 'The Death Of General Wolfe'. In later life he turned his hand to literary subjects, with 'Milton and His Daughters' and 'Scene from The Tempest'. Today, he is considered one of the finest of the English School Of Art. Toward the end of his life he moved to Kendal in Cumbria, and was buried in Dalton In Furness.
