Winifred Settle Howell.
Mrs. Howell departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John V. Cox, of Hunnewell, Shelby county, Missouri, on the morning of January I8, 1888, at the ripe old age of 92
The deceased was born in Louisa county, Va., Sept. 9, 1795. In her 6th year her parents moved to Kentucky, then almost a wilderness. When 17 she married John Howell, and in 1822 they removed to Missouri, and in 1823 settled on the old Howell farm, in Marion county. Mo. The late Moses Bates, of Palmyra, was her brother. Her husband died in 1857. She had seven children ; two died while young; one was blown up on a Mississippi steamer when just a man grown; one died in Texas; Maj. Wm. Howell, of Paris, departed this life a few years since ; and two, Judge John Howell, of Louisiana, and Mrs. Cox still live. She leaves 22 grand-children, Mrs. Jewett, of this city, being one of them ; also 43 great-grand-children, and one great- great-grand-child.
This old lady has lived under all the presidents of the United States. She has always been vigorous, free from disease, and her death, like her life, was free from pain and suffering. She has been for many years a member of the Presbyterian church. A long and useful life has ended; and those who knew her grieve at her departure.
