She was known by her middle name Thelma. Mrs. Stewart was married twice, the first time to Carl Yates. This union produced two children, a daughter Carla Sue and a son Erman. Carla Sue married Jim King and had two daughters: Sabrina King and Holly King (Morris). Sue passed away a few years ago and is buried up around Crewe, Virginia. Erman never married and passed a few years ago. Thelma and Carl divorced before their children were grown.

The second marriage was to Luster Stewart; they divorced soon after.

Thelma was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Pennington Gap. She was a schoolteacher for many years. Her home was on Joslyn Avenue, close to the public library in Pennington. Erman lived with his mother all his life, having intellectual disabilities.
