Marvin Byron Hanson was born in Grand Forks, Dec. 12, 1943, the son of Byron and Marva (Diamond) Hanson. He graduated from Hallock High School and was goalie on the 1961 state hockey team.
Marvin attended the University of Minnesota in 1962. In 1963, he joined the Peace Corps, serving in Bolivia until 1964. He returned to the University of Minnesota and graduated with an agricultural economics degree in 1967.
Marvin went on to attend Columbia University and he received his Juris Doctorate in 1970. In 1971, he married Gayle Stoll of Denison, Iowa. They had two children; George H. (Heather) Hanson, Lancaster, and Kate S Hanson, St. Paul. Marvin married Kathryn F. Rynning, Kennedy, in 1998.
Marvin served in the Minnesota State Senate from 1976 to 1982. He served as assistant majority leader in 1979 and was vice chairman of the Senate Rules Committee. Marvin ran for the U.S. Congress in 1988.
He was active on the Kittson Memorial Hospital Board and the Red River Lutheran Church Council where he was a life long member. He served on the Harvest States Co-op Board from 1985 to 1995; and was a former board member of Prairie Public Television. Marvin was also a member of the Farm House Fraternity while at the University of Minnesota and was voted Red River Valley's "King Agassiz."
He is also survived by his father, Byron, Hallock; a sister, JoAnn Hanson, Helena, Mont.; a step daughter, Cindy M. (James J.) Lennon, Marine on the St. Croix; two step sons, Robert C. (Darlene Lindberg) Rynning and Timothy J. (Lisa) Rynning both of Kennedy; eight grandchildren; three nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marva in 1994 and a brother, Calvin in 1991.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 5, 2004, in Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock. Interment was in the Red River Lutheran Cemetery. Rev. Erling Huglen and Rev. Kenneth Losch presided.
Honorary pall bearers were Glen Lundberg, Bob Boychuk, John Corbid, Lynn Rynning, Mike Mattson, Jim Tunheim, Dennis Diamond and Gary Johnson.
Pall bearers were Tim Rynning, Robert Rynning, Noel Peterson, Shawn Hanson, Jerod Hanson and Greg Clinton.
