CROUSE, SOLOMON, 16, Laborer, 1860 AlCC HH#526. Alleghy Cty NC then Ashe Cty. NC

Enlisted Co. F, 22nd NC Inf. Res. of Alleghany Co., where Enl. on 3/15/62, age 18.
Taken POW in 1862, held at Fort Monroe until exchanged on 9/7/62 at Aiken's Landing, James River, VA.
AWOL from 10/62, then NFR.
Co. B, 4th VSL. Co. I2, 21st Va. Cav., Enl. on 4/2/63.
AWOL on 6/30/63, NFR.

Disappeared on nite before Gettysburg Battle during the many skirmishes outside Gettysburg. Never returned home. Probably buried in unmarked mass grave at Gettysburg as there were so much chaos after the 3 day battle and it took months to bury the dead.

SPECIAL NOTE: Maybe buried at HOLLYWOOD CEME. RICHMOND VA
Some gave all. Note: While it is not proven that he is buried at Hollywood, it is known that 9 years after the war, effort was made to relocate all the Confederate Gettysburg dead to southern cemeteries. Most of those were sent to Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. Many are unknown. Odds are, this is where most of the Confederate Gettysburg dead that remain unidentified are located.

NOTES
Solomon Crouse, b. abt. 1845, Ashe Co., NC; d. May 1864 in the Civil War;

Married Sarah Jane BILLINGS, Jan. 8, 1864, Alleghany Co., NC (b. Aug. 13, 1844; d. Oct. 3, 1939).
Sarah remarried to Jacob ESTEP (EASTEP) in 1866 and they moved to Hardin Co., IA, and from there to Texas.
Sarah is buried at the Crandall Cemetery in Kaufman Co., TX.

Odds are, he probably was not buried at Gettysburg National Cemetery. National Cemeteries were reserved for union soldiers. Rarely would there be a Confederate soldier in a national cemetery. Nine years after the war, great efforts were made to dig them all up and move them to southern cemeteries. About 2/3 of them were found and relocated. Of those, most were moved to Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond VA. The rest were moved to cemeteries in Raleigh NC, Savannah GA, and Charleston SC. So, while it is unknown where he is, it is pretty certain where he would not be. Odds are in favor of Hollywood Cemetery. There is a large section of Gettysburg dead there and many are unknown. He has a good chance of being there in my opinion. I am trying to find a Gettysburg dead Confederate soldier myself and this is what I learned in my research. He is also probably an unknown at Hollywood.
