Bob joined the US Navy in January of 1948 to become a Navy Corpsman. He served for four years. He returned home to attend the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, receiving his BS in Elementary Education in 1957.

He and his wife Marilyn, also a teacher, moved to Colorado Springs in 1960 where he taught English at East and Irving Junior High Schools. During summer months he pursued and earned his Master's Degree from Western State College in Gunnison, CO in 1965. He retired in 1981.

Travel was also high on their retirement list. They enjoyed Australia, New Zealand, Germany and England.

He fought a brave battle with cancer for over one year. His body was donated to the medical school at the University of Colorado for later inurnment beside his daughter, Susan. He was 78 at the time of his passing.
