Edwin was born July 3, 1884 in Nanaimo to Samuel Gough and Emily Elizabeth Woodward. Both of his parents were originally from England. Samuel married Sadie (Sarah) Beatrice Reid on October 15, 1915. He worked as a tax collector for the City of Nanaimo from 1931 to 1951.

He died on June 17, 1971 from congestive heart failure.
