Paul and Ida Thompson were married in 1902 after moving to Summit, SD. They had two sons and a daughter: Glen, Lila, and Paul Jr. He was a drayman in 1902 and city cop in 1904-05.

In 1905, he began to build roads with horses. Paul built Highway 12 on the Marvin Hill. He was also responsible for building a major portion of Highway 12 to Aberdeen and old 81 north to Sisseton. His son Glen worked with him. His wife Ida cooked for the crew in the cook car.

In 1932, he bought a large snow plow to remove snow in the winter.

He was also the ice man, driving out to Lake Summit, cutting the ice and storing it to sell throughout the year.
