According to the Certificate of Death, he was born in Lee County, a son of Lillian Kennedy Stokes and Perry Dixon Stokes. His mother and the mother of his brothers died shortly after his birth. The 1900 Census shows his father, Perry as a widower living in Lee County with 3 sons including Raymond, Luther and Walter.
