Our loving and beautiful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother went to live with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday May 7, 2019 at the age of 86.

Josephine Mathilda Marie Mickan was born to Selma Mickan (Richter) and Walter Mickan in Georgetown, Texas on December 5, 1932. She was the oldest of four children. She attended Zion Lutheran School in Walburg, Texas, through eighth grade, and graduated from Georgetown High School with the class of 1951.

Josephine was baptized and later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Walburg. Josephine’s leadership and servant heart showed in many aspects throughout her life. She was a member of the Lutheran Woman’s Missionary League for numerous years, where she served as President and held positions on various committees, was involved in the Walther League, and sang in the choir. She was proud to have helped start Zion Lutheran’s Wurstbrauten Sausage Supper, a tradition and well-known community event still held annually!

Josephine married the love of her life, Milton Louis Cockrum, on June 17, 1951. They moved to their farm and ranch on CR 111 in Georgetown, where they lived for over 50 years. Milton and Josephine were blessed with three children, David Cockrum, Bradley Cockrum and Patty Groves.

Josephine and Milton were Charter Members of Faith Lutheran Church, which began as a church plant in February 1982. They continued to participate in church life at Faith Lutheran, and were members of the OWLS group.

Josephine was instrumental in Milton’s success as a cattle rancher, farmer, and cotton gin owner. She managed the office work and bookkeeping at the cotton gins in Round Rock and Pflugerville.

Her store was located in Downtown Georgetown for 15 years and sold an extensive line of china, stainless, sterling and beautiful baby items. Josephine had four great helpers and friends at the shop for whom she was thankful: Alberta Johnson, Alpha Carter, Sally Mickan (mother), and Patty Groves (daughter).

Josephine had an amazing green thumb, and grew a huge garden full of vegetables and fruit trees for many years. Her family has fond memories of large gatherings and celebrations at her home featuring her wonderful homemade cooking. Josephine exceled at being a loving grandmother, and could always be counted on to help with grandchildren in any way. Her homemade chicken noodle soup could cure all ails!

During their retirement years, Josephine and Milton enjoyed traveling with the Granger Road Runners Travel Group, and saw many beautiful sights all over the US. They also traveled abroad to Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
