She was married to James Edgar Smith (1910–1984).
A resident of Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, Dovie died June 27, 2014 at age 89.
Preceded in death by her twin sister, her husband and by her grandson Benny F Smith Jr, she was survived by four daughters, ten grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, ten 2nd-great-grandchildren, a sister and a brother.
Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Nashville.
