Mary F. Coffee Buried Tuesday – Church Worker of St. Helens Native New Yorker

Mrs. Mary Freeland Coffee, church worker, who died last Saturday in her home at St. Helens, was a resident of Oregon since 1904. Funeral services were conducted at the Miller & Tracey chapel Tuesday, interment being at Riverview cemetery.

Born April 2, 1864, at Wilson, N.Y., she joined the Free Methodist church at an early age. She was educated at Chili, N.Y., and Evansville, Wis., and began a teaching career in 1887 at the Wessington Springs seminary at Sioux Falls, S.D. For some time she was deputy county auditor and registrar of deeds in Jerauld county, South Dakota.

In September, 1888, she was married to Rev. Wilbur N. Coffee. To this union were born six children, one of whom died in infancy. Surviving are Mrs. Ruth C. Hollis of Forest Grove, Mrs. Lois C. Foster of St. Helens, George F. Coffee of Spokane, Carrie C. Cilva of China and Mrs. Nina C. Smith of St. Helens, in addition to 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Emma F. Shay of Wessington Springs, S.D., and Mrs. Sarah F. Coffee of Pasadena.

With her husband, Mrs. Coffee traveled circuits in South Dakota and Iowa from 1888 until 1904. She ws elected delegate from the South Dakota Women's Missionary society to the first delegated body of that organization. Later she was elected four times to represent the Oregon Women's Missionary society. She held the office of conference resident in South Dakota and Oregon for 22 years. Fro a number of years she was missionary box superintendent for the entire church.
