Doug died Saturday June 28, 2014, at the Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado.
Douglas Richard Terry, 62, passed away June 28th in Englewood, Colorado.
Doug lived a full and wonderful life. He was born in Norfolk, Nebraska to Paul David Terry and Jeanne Frances McCune, on December 18th, 1951. Doug was born with Down Syndrome, but thanks to a loving family and special programs for the mentally challenged in Madison County, he was always well cared for. Doug was a Nebraskan and lived most of his life in his hometown of Norfolk. The past several years he received care at the home of his brother Bob and Bob's wife Nancy in Fort Collins, Colorado. His final months of care were with the wonderful staff of the Julia Temple Dementia Living Facility in Denver, Colorado.
Doug had high self-esteem, great pride, and was a man who liked to have fun. He loved sports. Doug was a frequent bowler at Kings Lanes, loved to shoot baskets for hours, play putt-putt golf, and was a Special Olympics Champion swimmer and bowler. He was a huge fan of Nebraska Cornhusker Football and reminded us often that they were #1. He loved going to Cornhusker football games, but also loved his nephews football and baseball games and going to Coors Field to watch the Colorado Rockies. Always a high roller, when Doug went to a game, he liked his tickets "down low".
Doug was something special. He received many loving nicknames from his father, Paul; among those: "Hoss Cartright", "J.R. Ewing", "Tom Osborne", and "Punchnose". When people talk about happiness they will often advise you to "Dance as if no one is watching". Well, Doug danced, but he really preferred an audience and loved to entertain those around him…not just with moon-walking, but also by mimicking the Three-Stooges, blowing smoke off his imaginary pistols, or flexing his muscles. Doug was a also a fan of the movie classics, "Grease", "Sound of Music" and the "Wizard of Oz". His music tastes were diverse, he liked Shania Twain (Cute Woman!), but probably Michael Jackson, K.C. and The Sunshine Band, or the Nebraska Fight Song would top his list.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his siblings Paul D. Terry Jr., Springfield, VA; Robert Terry, Fort Collins, CO; Ann Terry of Bellerose, NY; Sherm Terry of Colorado Springs, CO; Michael Terry of Shelton, NE; his God- Mother, Nancy Hughes of Norfolk; and his Step-Mother, Virginia (Renner) Terry, of Norfolk.
