Martin Vaaler was born, Leotis Martin Kent Odland on April 8, 1927 in Minot, ND.

He died June 28, 2014 in Elgin, ND.

His parents were Martin and Leota Odland. His mother died within 24 hours of giving birth. A few months after he was born Martin went to live with his aunt and uncle Theodore and Thea (Odland) Vaaler in Kenmare, ND. Martin was adopted by the Vaaler's just before he started grade school.

Martin graduated from Kenmare High School in 1945. While attending high school he was given the nickname "Duke". He was involved in sports, music, played piano in a five member orchestra band called the "Ad-Libs" and many other activities. Martin graduated early from High School in 1945 to join the Navy. After being discharged from the Navy he attended Dana College in Nebraska for two years and then completed his college education at Minot State College. He graduated in 1950 with a History major and Music minor.

Martin began his teaching career in 1950 in Anamoose ND. In 1954 the Governor of North Dakota appointed Martin to a vacancy in the Public Service Commission. He was then elected to a six year term as Public Service Commissioner in 1956. On September 2, 1956 Martin married Gloria Tibke in Elgin, ND. His son Kurt was born in May 1960.

In July 1963 the family moved to Elgin, ND where he lived until his death. Martin taught music and history at the high school in New Leipzig and Elgin, ND for many years.

One of Martin's passions was his belief in the principles that our founding fathers used when writing the Constitution and forming the Representative Republic we call the United States of America. He believed in limited government, following the moral law that God gave to man, that each American is protected by the Constitution, and personal responsibility is required for a strong nation. In order to educate and have public debate on these issues Martin ran for many state offices in his life including: Secretary of State, North Dakota Congressmen, and Governor.

Martin was an active member of Immanuel Luther Church serving as organist for over 43 years and served on various committees at the church. He was also active in the American Legion for 62 years and was the Municipal Judge for Elgin for over 20 years.

Martin's love for music kept him involved in many music activities and groups over the years. He was still playing piano while he was a resident at Dakota Hills Housing.

Martin passed away at the Jacobson Memorial Hospital in Elgin, ND on Saturday, June 28, 2014.

Survivors are his wife Gloria (married 57 years); son Kurt (Susan) Vaaler of Farmington Hills, MI; granddaughter Nicole Vaaler of Milwaukee, WI; and half-sister Marcia (Skip) Lee of Battle Lake, MN.
