Suggested edit: Lizzie was born November 22, 1898 in Holstein Russia to Susanna Ann Ehrhardt and Alexander Bender Sr. Her mother died in Russia about 1899. She had two older sisters, Anna and Mary. Her father married Mary C. Krentz in 1900. The family left Russia and came by ship (SS Frankfort ) to Galveston Texas. arriving on January 13, 1902. Lizzie was three years old. They traveled by train to settle on a homestead south of Shattuck, Oklahoma. At the age of 17 she married Jacob Becker who had come to America about 1912. They had six children. Willie, Roy, Rose, Alex, Virginia and Jacob. In 1920 they were living in Lipscomb County, Texas. Her husband Jacob died in November 1929 and is buried in the Shattuck, Oklahoma, SDA Cemetery. She met John Stahler and they were married in the summer of 1930. John wanted to go to Alaska and work in the gold mines. In April of 1935 , Lizzie and her children were saying their goodby's to relatives when a bad dust storm darkened the sky . This day in history is known as "Black Sunday". They missed their train and left a couple of days later. By 1940 they had moved to Talkeetna, Alaska. John worked as a driller in the gold mines. Lizzie was a housekeeper and later opened a cafe and hotel. In later years they moved to Washington where her daughter was living. John died in May 1988 in Sequim, Washington. Lizzie's children Willie, Roy, Alex and Rose had already returned to Oklahoma. Her son Jacob was the only one who stayed in Alaska. Lizzie lived with her sons Roy and Alex who lived in Amarillo, Texas until she became very ill. She passed away on August 1, 1989 and is buried in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas.
