Louisa Winans Gilbert 1816 to 1893

Louisa Winans Gilbert was born in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey to Lois Hand & John Winans on April 16, 1816. In 1836 Louisa Winans married Jonas Gilbert in Shelby County, Ohio. To the union were born six children in Darke County Ohio. In 1865 Louisa and Jonas Gilbert made up a wagon train of colonists to go to Nebraska. After a journey lasting 52 days, the wagon train reached its destination on Turkey Creek, in what later became Saline County. Jonas became one of the counties first commissioners, the son became the counties first assessor. Later the son John served his district as Representative in the state legislature.
Their son John dedicated the Gilbert Library in 1916 and gave the library to the town of Friend. There are photos of both Louisa Winans Gilbert and her son John Winans Gilbert hanging in the Gilbert Library, Friend, Saline County, Nebraska.
This cemetery has been vandalized on numerous occasions. It is a pioneer cemetery as well. The stones are very hard to read and probably only half were in a condition to photograph.
