Mary was the daughter of Ethel (Whitney) and James E. Rodenbeck in Attica, Indiana.
She died peacefully on July 8, 2014, at the Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington, Indiana. Her daughter Merribeth Fender of Bloomington, who had been her amazing and unwavering caregiver for the past 10 years, and her devoted granddog Kimber were by her side.
Mary was the consummate example of living with grace and class, enhancing the lives of all she made contact with, loved ones and strangers alike. She did not know how to judge or hate, a true Christian, always supporting her children and putting their happiness above all else. She was kind, compassionate, loving, accepting and generous, and is sorely missed.
She graduated from Spencer High School before marring Charles Winders and having her first child Judi Bowman of Indianapolis. She later divorced and married James David Fender. They had two children, Mark Fender of San Antonio and Merribeth, before divorcing.
Mary worked as a nurse in Spencer for many years, raising her three children primarily by herself, and was a member of the Liberty Church of Christ in Solsberry later in life. She loved playing cards, walking, and socializing.
She married Troy Breeden, beloved owner of the Shell station in Spencer, Indiana for many years. He preceded her in death in 1990. She is survived by stepdaughter Jane Frye of Terre Haute, who could not have been more helpful and loving to her in the last years of her life, and stepson John Breeden of Arizona.
Mary was preceded in death by sisters Lenore Smith and Grace Ooley, and brother Charles Rodenbeck. She is survived by sister Ruth White of Spencer; three children; two stepchildren; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and doting granddogs Kimber, Ruby and Toma. She is also survived by Merribeth's ex-partner of 16 years, Linda Cajigas of Bloomington, whom Mary immediately and unconditionally embraced as "another daughter".
Funeral services will be held at 1p.m., Monday, July 14, 2014, at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until time of service on Monday.
