James Cecil Burnside, Jr.


Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Thursday, June 26, 2014, Mr. James Cecil Burnside, Jr, 90, husband of the late Grace Wilhite Burnside. He was the son of the late James C. Burnside, Sr. and Johnnie Ramsey Burnside.


Mr. Burnside was a native of Augusta. He was a graduate of Richmond Academy, and attended CMTC. He served in the Navy Air Force as a Flight Engineer during World War II. He was the President of Burnside Furniture and served as President of the Augusta Retail Furniture Dealers. He was also a Mason. Mr. Burnside was a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, President of the Men of the Church and Chairman of the Baptismal Committee. He was a member of the Exchange Club of Augusta and Andrew's Lodge F & A. M.


Family members include daughters: Julie B. Whitaker (Gene), Ceil B. Polk (John), and Brenda B. Jenison (Chip); Grandchildren: Christy B. Flores, Heather W. DeMott, John Burnside, Brandi J. Rohe and Brandon Whitaker. Great grandchildren: Elizabeth, Nicholas and Zachary Flores. Will, Anna, Emma and Fischer DeMott, Forrest Whitaker and Ella and Presley Burnside. He is preceded in death by his beloved son: John Barry Burnside, his sister Claudia B. Calhoun and brother: E.H. "Buck" Burnside.


The family would like to thank Russell, Val and all the caring staff at Kentwood Nursing home for their loving care.


Funeral services were held Monday, June 30, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel at Thomas Poteet & Son with Dr. Rodger B. Murchison officiating. Pallbearers were his grandsons and sons-in-law. Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Augusta Exchange Club. Interment followed in Westover Memorial Park with military honors.
