Margaret "Peg" Murray Hinkle, RD, surrounded by her family, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Riverside Methodist Hospital.

She was the beloved wife of Dr. Robert Charles Hinkle, mother of Kathleen Hinkle (Robert) Cande of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Dr. Robert M. (Fran) Hinkle of Columbus, Ohio, and Timothy J. (Michel Kirby) Hinkle of Los Angeles, California; grandmother to Dr. Ryan Murray (Alyssa), Lauren Ann and Andrew Charles Hinkle. Her father and mother, John Joseph and Margaret Fox Murray, a sister, Catherine Murray Pons, her twin brother John Joseph Murray and Robert, husband of 51 years, preceded her in death.

She was born December 22, 1928 in Forestville, Connecticut and graduated from Greene-Hills Elementary and Bristol High School there. She earned her undergraduate degree in Home Economics, graduating with distinction from the University of Connecticut in 1946, where she was elected a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and Mortar Board. She came to Ohio to attend graduate school. She earned a M.S. degree in Dietetics at The Ohio State University in 1952, after completing a dietetic internship at University Hospital. She worked as a clinical dietitian at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut from 1952-1954. She returned to Columbus to work at University Hospital and married Dr. Robert C. Hinkle on June 18, 1955.

She served her profession by providing accurate and timely nutritional information to the public. She was a co-founder of Dial-A-Dietitian in Columbus, and co-author of The Low Sodium Handbook. She was an active member of the American Dietetic Association, Ohio Dietetic Association, Columbus Dietetic Association, and the Columbus Dietetic Practice Group. She enjoyed nearly 20 years as a consulting dietitian/nutritionist in private practice, retiring in 2001.

She reached an even broader audience by serving for 10 years as liaison from the American Dietetic Association to the American Dental Association, advising on issues concerned with diet and oral health. She was a contributing writer for Focus on Ohio Dentistry and KEY Newsletter (Alliance of the American Dental Association) and had a nutrition update segment on WOSU Public Radio for 14 years. She was the first Ohio recipient of the Alliance's Thelma J. Neff Award for leadership and excellence in service. She was president, longtime member and delegate to the Alliance of the Ohio Dental Association. She published a number of articles in professional journals.

The Ohio State University School of Home Economics honored her in 1971 with a distinguished service award. In 1975 she was voted Columbus' Outstanding Club Woman, recognizing significant contributions to the community through her club affiliations. She received the President's Award from the Ohio Dietetic Association, and the Oho Dental Society Achievement Award for 25 years of service to the promotion of the dental profession.

She loved to travel and entertain family and friends. She was very proud of her Irish heritage. She was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church for over 50 years. She was a member and served in leadership positions of Chapter AV PEO Sisterhood, Starling-Ohio Women's Club, St. Agatha Women's Club and Mortar Board Alumni.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at St. Agatha Catholic Church, 1860 Northam Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio with the Reverend Daniel L. Ochs officiating. Following the mass the family will receive friends at the Monsignor Kennedy Hall adjacent to the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Bob & Peg Hinkle Family Fund, Ohio Dental Association Foundation, 1370 Dublin Road, Columbus, Ohio 43215, or to a favorite charity. Arrangements by SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, Ohio. Private interment at a later date at Resurrection Cemetery, Lewis Center, Ohio.
