Mable Alice (Stroop) Payne, 91, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Thursday June 26, 2014 at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

Mrs. Payne was born on October 1, 1922 in Rockingham County and was a daughter of the late Lester and Rebecca (Griffith) Stroop. Mable was a longtime and active member of Otterbein United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was also a former member of Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church. Mrs. Payne worked for Metro Pants and The Fabric Shop. Mable was an expert seamstress and she also enjoyed quilting, crafts, and crocheting.

On June 30, 1944 she married Ralph Payne who preceded her in death on September 14, 2001.

Mrs. Payne is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Sam Morris of Harrisonburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Judy Payne of Manassas, VA; three siblings, Maxine Perry, Russell Stroop, Ruel Lee Stroop, all of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Christopher Morris of San Diego, CA, William "B.J." Payne, of Harrisonburg; a step-granddaughter, Christina Smith of Big Stone Gap, VA; and one great-granddaughter, Sarah Morris of San Diego, CA. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Payne; and two brothers, Roy Stroop and Raymond Stroop.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday June 29, 2014 at 2 P.M. at McMullen Funeral Home with Rev. Adam Blagg officiating. Burial will follow at Singers Glen Cemetery.
