John was born to Robert J. and Wynton D. (Kennedy) Latham. When he was two years old his family moved to San Diego where he graduated from Point Loma High School in 1932. He was the owner of a salvage yard and tire shop on Main Street. Shortly before Christmas 1945, John fired one of his employees which happened to be 28-year-old Robert Sewell. Two days later, John was found murdered at his salvage yard and tire shop. Evidentially, Mr. Sewell confessed to the crime and was sentenced to life in prison where he died in 1951 at San Quentin (where ironically and sadly 53 years later Mr. Latham's grandson would be sentenced to death for the murder of his wife and unborn child). Mr. Latham was survived by his wife and their four children.
