JERRY A. RIGGINS JR

Jerry A. Riggins Jr, 83, of Quincy, passed away at 7:03 p.m. Thursday (August 25, 2016) in Blessing Hospital.

Born February 1, 1933, in Beverly, Illinois, Jerry was the son of Jerry and Esther McBride Riggins. He married Shirley Miller on October 2, 1954 in Quincy in Luther Memorial Church. She survives.

Jerry served his country in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1954.

Jerry was a 1952 graduate of Quincy High School and remained close with his class, acting as the co-chairman of his class reunions. He was member of Luther Memorial Church, where he was very active, serving as an usher, Treasurer, money counter and on the Church Council for many years. Jerry was also a life member of the Herman Masonic Lodge No. 39, Quincy Consistory, Ansar Shrine Temple in Sprinfield, Quincy Shrine Club and was a Past President of the Quincy High Twelve Club No. 40. He was a member of the Quincy JayCee's, Exhausted Roosters, Rotary Club and a Past President of the Breakfast Optimist Club. Jerry was an avid Blue Devil Basketball fan and served on the Quincy High School Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament for several years. He attended all of his grand-children's school events and enjoyed golfing, caning chairs at the Senior Center and his early morning Hardee's breakfasts with his buddies.

Jerry was as an Appraiser for Gem City Savings and Loan Association in Quincy from 1957 until 1978, when they transferred him to be the manager of the Gem City Savings and Loan Association in Macomb, Illinois, until 1990. He then was employed at the Mercantile Bank at 8th and Jersey, until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; three daughters, Cheryl Brinkman (Joe), Jeri Anne Nicholson (Bill) and Susan Sammons; seven grandchildren, Sara Brinkman, Laura Benz (Chris), Emily Nicholson, Daniel Nicholson (Kari), Carrie Nicholson, Kimberly Barnes (Bobby) and Jonathan Sammons; and nine great grandchildren, Payton, Caleb, Khloe and Kenna Nicholson, Miller, Myer, Maelyn and one due in December Benz, Kia and Keenan Barnes and Colin Nicholson.

Mr. Riggins was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10:00 in Luther Memorial Church with Pastor Tony Metz officiating. Burial will be in Ellington Home Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and Monday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 at the church. Herman Masonic Lodge will conduct Masonic Services at 7:00 Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Arrangements are with the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Luther Memorial Church or the Area Agency on Aging at the Senior Center.
