John W. Shuler, funeral director at Waynetown for many years and former Montgomery County councilman, died in Hollywood, Fla., hospital Friday morning. He was 94 years old.
A native of Fountain County, Mr. Shuler left this area in 1949 not long after his retirement after 45 years in business in Fountain and Montgomery counties.
He attended schools in Fountain County, graduating in 1890. He attended Central Normal College at Danville, Ind., and qualified for a teacher's license. He taught school five years in Fountain County and during that time became the youngest person in the state to be elected a township trustee.
During his term as Jackson Township trustee the first high school there was erected.
In 1894 Mr. Shuler and his father, Samuel, purchased a furniture store and undertaking business in Wallace. They disposed of that business in 1901 and purchased a similar establishment in Waynetown.
After his retirement, he and his wife, the former Cordelia Philpott, moved to Crawfordsville. She died Nov. 20, 1947.
Mr. Shuler later married Maude Ballard of Hollywood, Fla.
He was a past master of both Wallace and Waynetown lodges Royal Arch Masons, Knights Templar, past patron of Eastern Star and member of Knights Pythias.
He had been active also with the local Red Cross chapter and the Tuberculosis Association, serving several years on the board of directors of the state TB Association.
Mr. Shuler was also a member of the Crawfordsville Christian Church.
Survivors include the widow; a granddaughter, Mrs. Susan Kellett, New York City; a stepson, Chester Ballard, Huntington; a step-daughter, Mrs. Louise Smith, Galesburg, Mich., and daughter-in-law, Marie Shuler.
His only two children, Harold J. Shuler and Dr. Lacey Lee Shuler, preceded him in death.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bright Funeral Home with Rev. Guy Tremaine officiating. Calling hours will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
