He was a bachelor school teacher who boarded with his sister Hanna Thomas after his retirement. The 1904 through the 1910 city directories show Hugh as a book binder, living with his parents and brother at 5145 S. Winchester. The 1928 Polk Directory of Chicago finds him living at 5829 Artesian, Chicago and says that he is employed at Tilden Technical High School. He moved to California, after retirement, lived with his sister and her husband and died in Santa Ana, Orange Co., CA. Hugh Miller Hotchkin calls him, "the scholar of the family".

His mother was Anna (Annie) Miller Hotchkin, born June 1861 in MO and died 4 Dec 1905 in Chicago. Burial location not known.
