"Where is William Cresswell buried?

Date: Jun 25, 2014 5:40 PM

My gggrandfather was a William Cresswell married to Sarah Dozon or Dozson Cresswell.

He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey next to his son, Frank. There is some bio info on the website for Greenwood Cemetery.

Spellings are a challenge. We have always spelled our name Cresswell, as William's name is spelled on his Civil War discharge papers. But I notice spelling is not a strong suit in genealogy references so if you are looking for a Creswell with one "S" I assume it could well be the same.

Another discrepancy is birthdate. The Petoskey cemetery historical note states William's birthdate was 1818, not 1808 as you have referenced in your request for info. The year of death is the same, 1887.

It was my understanding that William got land from the gov't for his service---which was only a few months---in the Civil War. In walking the Greenwood Cemetery I see many Civil War veterans are buried there, probably for the same reason.

Sarah is the interesting one. We have one document in the family written by her granddaughter giving Cresswell genealogy on this side of the ocean as she knew it. But the granddaughter, who was my grandfather's cousin, was in her 70's or so when she wrote it and stated she might not have all the details correct. Anyway, in that document she states Sarah's maiden name was Dozon, or something like that---the name"had a Z in it." My father always pronounced it "DOE-zun." But I have never been able to find anything out about Sarah in England where, according to family lore, she was born on the Isle of Man because her dad was a musician for the king and that's where the king was for the summer when Sarah was born. Nothing more is known about her or her family's background. She was sent away to boarding school and, on vacation at a classmate's home, she met William Cresswell, a blacksmith, and scandalized her father by marrying him. How they ended up in America is a tale well-told in the document the granddaughter wrote.

Another interesting note is that in our family we always called the cemetery Sarah Cresswell is buried in "the Ure Cemetery." It is across the road from Immerman Park, which used to be part of the Ure farm. Back a few generations we Cresswells are related to the Ures, who were a prominent Scottish pioneer family in Saginaw. One of the Ure daughters married Edward McCarty. No Ures are buried in that cemetery, they are all buried in Oakwood in Saginaw. Even more mysterious is the fact that the Ures did not marry into the Cresswell family till 3 generations later. Shortly before Dad died in 2004 we made my first trip to that cemetery. I asked Dad how a Cresswell ended up in the Ure cemetery but he did not know.

Several of us are interested in Cresswell genealogy.

Hope this helps."
