Mr. Clovis Whitfield "Whit" Foster, Sr., 92, a resident of Pulaski Highway in the Stiversville Community, died Monday, June 9, 2008, at his home.

Burial in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Born in Maury County to the late Walter Young and Cordie Mai Barnett Foster, he rode a speckled pony to and from school. He finished the ninth grade and helped his family make a living selling cantaloupe and tomatoes by horse and wagon.

On May 10, 1941, he married his sweetheart and best friend, Mary Pearl Hayes Foster. Together they were blessed with two children. He was a good husband, father, grandfather, brother, and provider for his family.

The church was a huge part of his live. He became a Christian by baptism in a nearby creek in the Stiversville Community. He was an active member of Stiversville Church of Christ where he served as a deacon. As a deacon, he served the church as a song leader, visited many people, and worked in and around the church building. In later years, he became known as "the man that sat at the church and waved".

Mr. Foster, known to his friends as "Whit", loved people, especially children, and the church. He was a joker, a cut-up, always full of entertainment, and the life of every event. He loved birthdays, the grandchildren's baseball games, golf, fishing, and was a coach for the Athensdale Mens Softball League for many years. He supported Culleoka School, and the school's sports, where he had his own special seat saved for him outside the concession stand to watch the sports. He played in the Ole Timers ballgames every year until he lost his health.

His first job outside the home, he worked for the State Highway Department. He helped build Highway 31, known as the Pulaski Highway. He also worked at Taylor's Furniture store as a salesman. In 1953, he began working for Union Carbide, where he worked as a miller. He enjoyed his job and made many dear friends during these years. In 1978, he retired with 25 years of service. After retirement, he went to the Columbia Mall every Friday and Saturday to meet with friends.

In addition to his wife of 68 years, he is survived by a son, Clovis (Betty) Foster, Jr. and a daughter, Glenna Ruth (Bobby) Thurman.

If Mr. Foster could leave you with one last message, he would say, "Live your life so that when you die, you're the one smiling, and everyone around you is crying".
