Johann Ulrich Beck was born on the 13th of March 1810 in Oberriexingen, Wuertemberg, Germany. He was the son of Ulrich Beck (1769 to 1840) and Barbara Schray (1772).

On the 2nd of February 1833 he married Maria Barbara Pfeiffer who was born on the 14th of December 1811 in Oberriexingen, Wuertemberg, Germany.

Johann Ulrich Beck and Maria Barbara Pfeiffer had thirteen children. The following children survived and came to America with their parents:
1. Jacob Ulrich Beck (1833 to 1899) who married Barbara and had six children.
2. Mary Beck (1837 to 1904) who married Walter Lee Wake and had eight children.
3. John Beck (1839 to 1915).
4. Christopher Beck (1841 to 1926) who married Rebecca Tash.
5. Frederick W. Beck (1847 to 1911) who married Lucy Jane Fields and had six children.
6. Caroline Beck (1850) who married Steven Doyle.
7. Katherine Beck (1853 to 1853). (died at sea)

In March of 1853 the family applied for permission to come to the United States. They arrived in New York via Le Havre, France aboard the ship, Ferriere, on the 4th of June 1853. It was a sad journey as their youngest daughter was born and died while on the voyage to America.

After arriving in New York the family moved to Springfield, Illinois by 1858 when Ulrich purchased 14 acres of land for a price of $156.56. This land later became Camp Lincoln. He dug the first grave in the Oak Ridge Cemetery at Springfield. Their time in America was short as both parents had died by the time of the 1860 census.

Ulrich's will was dated the 15th of July 1859 and is recorded at the Sangamon Court House. The will includes the following: 2 horse, 2 cows, 4 oxen, 8 heifers, 8 hogs, 2 wagons, 2 plows, 2 sets of harness, 3 bedsteads, bedding and one stove. It appears that Ulrich planned on an extended absence as he left his property in a trust for his wife.

His wife's will was written in December 1859. At the time of her will the eldest daughter was made executrix, but Ulrich was still alive.

A second will was found for Ulrich in which he refers to his first will which was written in 1859. This will was written on the 3rd of December 1877 and in this will he leaves his estate to a Barbara Maurer, the wife of Amos Maurer. It is unclear exactly who these people are.

Johann Ulrich Beck died on the 23rd of January 1881 at the age of seventy. His second will was probated on the 17th of May 1881 in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois.
