JEAN JENSEN LEIGH passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on June 21st in Gilbert, Arizona just short of her 95th birthday.
Born in Parowan, Utah on July 25th, 1919 to JOHN HENRY JENSEN and JENNIE RICHARDS JENSEN, Jean grew up there and graduated from Parowan High.
It was there that she first indulged her love of drama by playing lead parts in many of the school plays. She was also a cheerleader and played the French Horn in the high school band.
JEAN tried to put herself through college by working at Mary's Café in Cedar City Utah, but was forced to drop out due to financial difficulties during the depression.
However, as an avid reader she educated herself on many subjects. Eventually, Jean worked at the office of Doctors Prestwich and Graph where they trained her to perform many medical assistant duties.
While working at Mary's Café JEAN met HENRY H. (HAM) LEIGH of Cedar City, Utah who also worked there as a janitor.
He told his children that he loved to carry an occasional tray for Jean because she was so tiny but it is suspected that he had ulterior motives.
They married in Mississippi on July 31, 1943 while Ham was training to be a glider pilot during World War II.
JEAN also served her country by supporting her husband on the home front during his service in World War II and the Korean war. Together they raised three children, MIKE, JENNIE and DIANE.
JEAN was very talented in the performing arts where she demonstrated her skill in acting and dramatic reading. She also loved to dance and sing with Ham.
Her favorite pastimes were cooking for her family, reading, painting and attending live theater. She is best known by those who love her for her forgiving spirit and sense of humor which she maintained up until the time of her death.
Having been bedridden for four years, her noble and brave acceptance of her situation was an inspiration to all.
We will all miss her.
A graveside service will be held Friday, June 27, 2014 at 3:00 pm at the Parowan Cemetery in Parowan,
Utah under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
