Butch was a member of High Street Baptist Church and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He received his education at Virginia Western Community College with an Associate Degree in Broadcasting. As a retiree he continued to work various employment including his second family Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore, LLP.
He was known as the "Candy Man" to those he met at various places but to his children we called him (Diddy). He was a loving, kind and caring person who met no strangers. He was always ready to help anyone he could.
Those left to cherish his memories are his daughters, Valarie Preston (Joseph), DonAmia McCoy, both of Roanoke, Lynette McCoy-Woolfolk, of California, Athena McCoy, of Maryland and Suzzette McCoy; his son, Arthur McCoy III (Susie); a stepson, Alvin (Wayne) Miller, all of Roanoke; grandchildren, Russell Henderson Jr. (Dalaiah), Edward Henderson, both of Nevada, Joseph Preston Jr. (Nikki), of Texas, Tesia Preston, Pierre McCoy, Melvin Smith Jr., Omar Johnson, Elyshia Burnett, all of Roanoke and Shanell McCoy, of North Carolina; great-grandchildren, TeJuan and Jakye Preston, both of Texas, Syhmere Meadows, of Roanoke, Amariana Johnson, Christopher McCoy, both of North Carolina, Ashley Johnson, Kierra Mason, Melody Henderson, all of Roanoke and Doshanae Henderson, of Nevada.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2014, in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with the Rev. Paul Andrews Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. Friends may call on Friday afternoon June 27, 2014 for viewing at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. Arrangements by Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home, Roanoke.
