Jack L. Bates, Sr., 88, of Lancaster, died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at home of natural causes. He was the husband of Audrey (Haines) Bates for thirty years.

Jack worked as a pressman foreman for Business Press, Lancaster.

Born November 12, 1925 in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Arthur, Sr. and Lillian (Denlinger) Bates. Jack was a proud WWII, Navy Veteran and participated in the Battle of Okinawa. He was a member of the Millersville/ Manor VFW-Post 7294. He enjoyed Cape May, NJ and watching ships sail by.

Also surviving are three children, Debra, Donna and Jack Bates, Jr., all of Lancaster; two stepchildren, David R. Gross, of Lancaster and Steven Gross, of Willow Street; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and siblings, Betty Hershey, of FL and Bonnie Skiles, of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; one son, James Bates; a granddaughter, Kristin Bates; three grandchildren, Austin, Dalonte and Tirell; a step-daughter, Cherri Weiler and two brothers, Edward and Arthur Bates, Jr.

Funeral Services will be held at the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home, 320 Blue Rock Road, Route 999, Millersville, PA 17551 on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at 10 AM (Visitation 9:30-10 AM). Interment will be in the Millersville Mennonite Cemetery, Millersville, PA with Military Honors. Kindly omit flowers. Memorial Remembrances can be made in Jack's memory to the American Heart Association or the Susquehanna Valley Association for the Blind.
