Frederick Russell Chapman, Sr., age 88, son of the late Ralph and Helen (McKibbin) Chapman passed away peacefully on Monday, January 23, 2012 at the Lafayette Skilled Nursing Facility, Marblehead, Massachusetts. His health had deteriorated after complications from a surgery, four years ago, left him a paraplegic.

In his twenties, Fred served proudly as a Navy pilot on the USS Hornet in World War II. After the war, he married Helen (Kesler) Chapman of Toledo, Ohio, completed his college degree at the University of Illinois and started his career as a commercial artist in Toledo.

He loved to play golf and was a member of Heatherdowns Country Club. He was also a member of North Cape Yacht Club where he sailed his Folk boat and Morgan 30.

At 55, Fred moved to Mt. Desert Island, Maine with his second wife, Sarah (Levis) (Phillips) Chapman, where he started an art gallery, painted many land and seascapes and designed and built a post and beam house.

Fred is survived by, his son Russ Chapman and his wife Tamara Reisbach of Marblehead, MA, his daughters; Barbara Mauntler of Toledo, OH and Karen and her husband Doug DeGood of Atlanta, GA, his brother Walter and his wife Jean Chapman of Sylvania, OH, five grandchildren; Jamie and his wife Tracy (Honko) Mauntler of Toledo, OH, Lynn (Mauntler) Braker and her husband Tom of Lexington, KY, Alex DeGood and his wife Nancy Solomon of Los Angeles, CA, Kevin DeGood and his wife Lucy Melvin of Washington D.C. and Leah Chapman of Chicago, IL and three great-grandchildren; Maya and Sasha DeGood and Jace Mauntler.
