Funeral services for Nicholas J. Ruden, 77, prominent retired farmer and longtime resident here who died October 4 in the Sacred Heart hospital, Le Mars, after a long illness, were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church Saturday morning.

The requiem high Mmass was sung by the pastor, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Frank Schultes.

Mr. Ruden had previously been hospitalized and under medical care also at his farm home for a long time, but suffered a stroke ten days before his death. He passed away at nine o'clock Thursday morning.

Born in Earling, Iowa, November 16, 1878, he was the son of the late Jacob and Anna Ruden, farmers who came to Remsen in 1900 and bought a farm five miles northwest of town in Fredonia Township.

He assisted on the farm until his marriage February 21, 1905, to Margaret Majeres, which took place in St. Catherine's Catholic Church In Oyens and was performed by the pastor, the late Rt. Rev. Msgr. H. Rolfes.

The couple settled on a farm in Fredonia Township near the homes of both their parents, and five years later in 1905 bought a farm several miles southeast of Remsen and operated there together faithfully until Mrs. Ruden passed away in 1924.

Mr. Ruden continued to operate the farm with the help of his children for 17 years, and in 1941 retired on the place, turning the work over to his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Wurth, who were in charge five years.

The Wurths moving to a nearby farm, the Ruden place was taken over by Mr. Ruden's son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ruden, who still live there. Mr. Ruden continued to live with his son and family until his death, except for a short time in town a few years ago.

Mr. Ruden was a lifelong member of the Catholic church in which he reared his excellent family, was a highly devoted family head, a splendid citizen, and a friend of all with whom he came in contact. He was considered one of the Remsen-Oyens community's outstanding men, beloved by all. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus many years.

Surviving are five sons, five daughters, one brother, and three sisters: Mrs. Wilfred (Mary) Wurth, Mrs. Ray (Bertha) Ludwig, John and Frank Ruden, Mrs. (Mathilda) Wurth, all of Remsen; Arnold Ruden, Marcus; Mrs. John (Helen) Kincald, Pueblo, Colo.; Sylvester Ruden, Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Martin (Armella) Willett and Edmund Ruden, Remsen.

The surviving brother is Joseph Ruden of Le Mars; the sisters are Mrs. Nicholas Majeres and Mrs. Lena Masuen, both of Le Mars, and Mrs. John Theisen of Oyens.

A wake was held at the Fisch Funeral Home, and members of the Knights of Columbus and many others prayed the rosary Friday night and attended the Mass Saturday. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery.

Pallbearers were six grandsons – Larry Ruden, Milo Wurth, Nicholas Wurth, Eugene Wurth, Robert Ruden, and Jimmy Ruden.
