Benjamin was the son of Shearjashub Bourn and his wife Ardelia Alger. Benjamin married first to Mary Stannis on January 11, 1849 at Hartford, Connecticut. Benjamin and Mary Stannis had six children. After Mary died Benjamin married second to his 1st cousin, Mary Jane Bourn on January 7, 1863 at Providence, Rhode Island, and they had a son Howard Bourn.
