From "Scrips and Scraps," abstracts from six old family scrapbooks: Richard Hughes, an aged and respected citizen of Sugarcreek township, died at his home here, March 6, 1902, in 83d year of age. Born in Scrubgrass township, Venango county, April 28, 1819, son of James and Nancy Hughes, pioneer settlers of county, living at old home until few years ago bought farm in Sugarcreek, near Cooperstown. On account of age and health came to Rocky Grove two years ago for care by sons and daughters in declining years. Married Miss Sarah Birtsel (sic) [Birtcil] of Rockland township in 1845 who survives with following children: Mrs Mary E Coxen, Sugarcreek; Mrs Mandy M Stroup, Mrs Lavina Keely and Lewis of Rocky Grove; Mrs Emma G Hurd of Sugarcreek. Three children, one daughter and two sons, deceased. One sister, Mrs Robert Porter, of Kennerdell, one brother, Samuel, of Reed, Pa, large number of relatives and friends.... Services at son-in-law's, J W Keely, Saturday evening, March 8, by Rev E W Rishel of Evangelical church and Rev F N Allison of Presbyterian church. Musical selections by choir of Evangelical church. Pall bearers, nephews and near relatives, a wish he expressed a short time before death. Taken to Lupher chapel for interment, near his farm, Sunday (March 9).
