Georgia Lou always strived for and succeeded in excellence. She attended public schools in Bonham and Paris, Texas, and also Paris Jr. College. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of North Texas in Denton in 1940, and a Master of Education Degree from the University of Texas, Austin, in 1953.
Her career began in 1940 as Business Education teacher in Rochester High School. After one year she joined the Texas Education Agency in Austin, where she served for nine years. During this time she was on leave-of-absence for one session of the Texas Legislature, serving as assistant to Senator Charles R. Jones of Bonham. Her 34 year teaching career in Austin began with three years at the old Allan Jr. High School, followed by 31 years at McCallum High School, where she taught business subjects, was coordinator of Vocational Office Education, and chairperson of the Business Education Department and Vocational Department.
During her career Georgia Lou was a member of many education associations at the local, state and national levels. She served as vice-president and then president of Texas Business Education association and was chosen Business Teacher of the year at that time (1969).
The list of her accomplishments fill many file folders of certificates and awards, but what she would like to be remembered for most is her genuine love and concern for everyone, including especially her family, friends, members of her church, former students, and her many friends at the Summit at Westlake Hills where she resided for 23 years (as of May 2013).
Georgia Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Bennett and Pearl Webb West; brothers, Ray, Joe, Wayne and Bill West; and sisters, Ruth Markwood, Polly Rice and Clara Fae Leeman. Survivors include a brother, Harry G. West of Timberon, NM; nieces, Betty Wilcox of Whidbey Island, WA; Peggy Nielson of Henderson, NV; Shirley Reynolds of Houston, TX; Reba Jo Fleming of Amarillo, TX; and Karyl Lu West of Midland, TX; nephew, Harry G. West, Jr. of Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico and many great nieces and nephews.
Georgia Lou will be sorely missed by her remaining family and friends she made throughout her entire life.
