The long and full lives of Sylvia G. and Ralph C. Martin will be remembered at A Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 11:00 AM, with a visitation beginning at 10:30 AM, at Appleyard's Home for Funerals in Rice Lake, WI. Burial will follow at Nora Cemetery. The celebration will continue with a luncheon and program at Lehman's Supper Club in Rice Lake at 1:00 PM. The significance and contributions of Sylvia and Ralph to the Gerland Family will also be celebrated when members of the Gerland Family from around the world gather for their biennial reunion in Long Beach, CA, July 30 - August 3.

Sylvia was born in Rice Lake, WI on April 3, 1920 to Conrad and Emma (Hassemann) Gerland. She died on January 5, 2014 at the N. C. Little Hospice in Edina, MN. She was 93.

Ralph was born in Charleston (Navy Yard), SC on October 11, 1924 to Ralph and Nonia (McIntyre) Martin. He died on April 10, 2011 at the Norman Regional Hospital in Norman, OK. He was 86.

Sylvia and Ralph were married at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Rice Lake, WI on March 27, 1948 ("on the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday" as Sylvia frequently recalled) by Pastor Henry Mueller. His son, Pastor Phillip Mueller, will preside at the service.

With degrees in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and Chemical Engineering from the University of Oklahoma (OU), Sylvia and Ralph lived in Saudi Arabia in their early marriage when Ralph worked for the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO). Upon their return to the United States, Sylvia and Ralph moved to Norman Oklahoma where both were employed by OU and became proud members of the Sooner Community.

A gathering of Friends, hosted by the family, was held in Norman, OK on Saturday, April 26, 2014.

Sylvia and Ralph are survived by a large extended family located throughout the United States and Germany.
