William Ray was the son of Samuel Taylor Ray, 1804-1884, and Margaret J. (McElroy) Ray, 1813-1851, and born near St. Mary, Marion County, Kentucky to a well-to-do family. His paternal grandparents were Nicholas Ray, 1747-1719, and Prudence (Peters) Taylor Ray, 1758-1851.

W. E. Ray, a 35 year old Marion County, Kentucky farmer married secondly to Miss Fannie B. Froman, a 21 year old Washington County, Kentucky native at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Washington County, Kentucky on Aug. 15, 1875 by the Rev. W. B. Arvin in the presence of Theodore Parrant and Nick Ray, Jr. L. H. Thurman was the surety to their marriage bond. This record can be found in Marriage Book #5 on page 153 in the County Clerk's Office in Springfield, Kentucky.

In the 1880 Federal Census of Pottsville, Washington County, Kentucky, page 357A, he is listed as a 43 year old Farmer. The household is listed as follows: W. E. Ray, 43; Fannie B. Ray, 26; Katie L. Ray, 10; Sam T. Ray, 4; Isaac H. Ray, 4; Lucy Ray, 2; Maggie Ray, 3 months, and Kittie Logan, 59.

In the 1900 Federal Census of Pottsville, Washington County, Kentucky, he is listed as William Ray, a 63 year old Kentucky born farmer.
