On January 19, 1916 as Richard Carman Hay, he married Frances Pauline Woodbury in Burlington, Vermont.
He and his wife were the parents of Barbara Hay Jewell (1918-1995) and Richard Carman Hay Jr. (1921-1998).

Professor Richard Hay, age 36, was recently appointed to the faculty of the Tuck School of Finance and was on his way to Hanover for the fall term of Dartmouth College. He and his parents left Peekskill, New York on Tuesday and stayed over night at North Adams. They left at 9:15AM. One hour later the automobile in which he was a passenger skidded on the highway, struck a ledge on the side of the road near the Deerfield River and turned over. He died instantly on the Mohawk Trail near Charlemont. The driver of the vehicle was his father, Major General W.H. Hay, United States Army, retired of Peekskill, New York. His mother, Mrs. Hay, was also a passenger in the vehicle and suffered a fractured rib and possible internal injuries.
