John Blanton was born about 1761, probably in Virginia. He lived in Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas before he entered Red River County in the Republic of Texas on 12 July 1836. Two days later he enlisted with Captain William Becknell's Company of Mounted Volunteer Rangers called the Red River Blues. He stated his age as 75. This Company has been determined to be an early unit of the Texas Rangers.

John Blanton died in November 1840 in Red River County. His burial place is unknown. The marker and Texas Ranger Cross were erected in his memory by John Galle and Debbie Blanton McCoy.

The wife and parents of this John Blanton have never been proven. He was not the John Blanton who married Elizabeth Wiseman.

The proven children of John Blanton are: Benjamin Blanton, Elisha Blanton, David Blanton, and Elijah Blanton. Isaac Blanton is NOT a proven son and was not mentioned in John's probate as a son.
