She was the daughter of John Fling and Elizabeth Gainer Fling. She was born in a part of Randolph County that is now Barbour Co. The Flings, together with several other families, moved from Randolph (Barbour) to the Tanner Creek area in the 1830s.

She married David Potter Ayers on June 8, 1852 in Gilmer Co., WV.
