Teresa Susan Atkerson, 51, of McAlester, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at McAlester Regional Health Center.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester. Born Dec. 30, 1955, in McAlester, she was the daughter of Virgil and JoAnn Ruth Gill Atkerson.

She attended and graduated from McAlester High School in the Class of 1973. She then attended the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha receiving her bachelor?s degree in music and drama.

She then went to work for the McAlester News-Capital & Democrat as a journalist for more than 19 years.

She enjoyed playing the piano, reading and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her father, Virgil Atkerson, of McAlester; two uncles, Bill Gill, of Tulsa, and Loren McCurtain, Dallas; an aunt, Lila McCurtain, Dallas and 11 cousins, Bucky Harp, of McAlester, Joe Harp, of McAlester, Larry Vaughn, San Antonio, Glen Phipps, San Antonio, Leohna Stacey, Houston, Greg McCurtain, Atlanta, Barry McCurtain, Dallas, Monte McCurtain, Dallas, Shannon Dugger, of Roosevelt, Glendolyn Stallsworth, Arlington, Texas, and Toni Yarbrough, Fort Worth, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her mother, JoAnn Ruth Gill Atkerson on June 2, 2006; two uncles, John Gill and David Gill, and three aunts, Nadine Gill, Gloria Harp and Betty Diaz.

In lieu of a memorial service, donations may be made to any non-profit organization.
