BOARDING HOUSE KEEPER KILLED IN THE STREET
A sad fatality occurred late on Monday night on The Dimple, Matlock. It appears that a traction engine with a furniture van attached was proceeding from Manchester to Matlock Bank, when in the intense darkness the driver missed his way. While going down Dimple Hill the engine skidded. The driver applied the brakes but without success. The engine turned completely round and the furniture van mounted the pavement. Unfortunately there was a passer-by named Florence Garton Acton, who owns Riverside Boarding House, Matlock Dale. She was knocked down and the van passed over both her legs. She died in the Whitworth Hospital half an hour later.
